  On December 18, 1997, United Telephone Company of the Northwest filed with 
the Commission revisions to its currently effective Tariff WN U-2, the 
following:

  The tariff sheets bear an inserted effective date    of January 19, 1998.  
This date recognizes statutory notice as 
re-quired.  The company requests, however, that statutory notice be waived and 
that the revisions become effective December 31, 1997.

  These tariff changes are to add language regarding Lifeline Assistance and 
Link Up America.  This language ensures compliance with the Federal 
Communications Commission’s (FCC) Orders, In the matter of Federal-State Joint 
Board on Universal Service, Provision of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, CC 
Docket No. 96-45(97-157) released May 8, 1997.

  The request for Less than Statutory Notice is in order to comply with the FCC 
order.

  Since the tariff revisions filed herein are fair, just and reasonable, and 
waiver of statutory notice is not inconsis- tent with the public interest, it 
is deemed appropriate that the company be granted the waiver it is requesting 
with an effective date of December 31, 1997.

FINDINGS

  After careful examination of the tariff revisions filed herein by United 
Telephone Company of the Northwest, December 18, 1997, and giving consideration 
to all relevant matters and for good cause shown, the Commission finds that the 
tariff revision should become effective December 31, 1997.

O R D E R

  THE COMMISSION THEREFORE ORDERS That the requested waiver of statutory notice 
in connection with the tariff revi- sions filed herein by Unied Telephone 
Company of the Northwest, December 18, 1997, is hereby granted, and the said 
tariff revi- sions shall become effec-tive December 31, 1997.
